Since Summer 2007, BAY NEWS 9, Tampa Bay’s 24-hour local news channel, has had a paid internship program that focuses on career paths in the producing and web news writing areas. Our summer term requires interns work forty hours per week while our spring and fall terms require twenty hours per week.
Internships are not automatically offered for each term. Students should continually check the Jobs page for internship postings. Information on deadlines can be found on the BAY NEWS 9 web site when the station is actively searching for interns. Only candidates applying online will be considered. No phone calls please.
Interns must provide a letter from their college indicating they will receive college credit for the internship. Interns receive monetary compensation but are not eligible for fringe company benefits, such as medical insurance.
BAY NEWS 9 is the Tampa Bay area's number one source for local news 24 hours a day. Since 1997 the station has proved itself as the Bay area's continuous source for breaking news and weather coverage. BAY NEWS 9's internship program serves as an introduction to a 24-hour local newsroom, methods of newsgathering, writing, and the stages of our newswheel production for individuals interested in pursuing a career as a news producer.
Ideal candidates for the internship program are college juniors and seniors, as well as graduate students, with an interest in pursuing a career as a news producer and have prior exposure to a professional newsroom environment. Interns are expected to fulfill a pre-determined schedule for a pre-determined length of time. All interns will receive hands-on training, including use of company equipment, while training and working alongside BAY NEWS 9 employees.
BAY NEWS 9's web news writer internship program serves as an introduction to an interactive news web site, writing, editing and posting stories in addition to adding video and news elements to BayNews9.com. The recipient of a regional Edward R. Murrow Award from the Radio Television News Director's Association, BAY NEWS 9's web site has state-of-the-art technology that allows BayNews9.com to come to viewers, with instant breaking news and weather updates sent directly to subscribers' email addresses, cell phone, and computer desktops.
