Governor Charlie Christ has named July 27th, 2010, as SS American Victory Recognition Day.
The 1940's era steamship served as a supply ship to the U.S. Military in World War II, during the Korean War and in Vietnan.
It arrived in Tampa in 1999, was restored, and became maritime museum that still sails from its Channelside port in Tampa.
The ship is celebrating this honor with half-price admission on Saturday, July 31st.
There will be snacks and kid's activities while supplies last!
The ship is open on Saturday from from 10 until 5...
See Tampa Bay On Demand's tour of the ship and meet volunteers like Charles Fuss. He worked on a merchant ship starting as a dishwasher. He recalled his parent's reaction when he broke the news that he'd driopped out of high school and signed on as a dishwasher.
"Not good," but Fuss can laugh about it now. In fact, Fuss has written a book about the SS American Victory and the efforts he and other volunteers have taken to preserve its honor.
