Cigar City Magazine is hosting tours through Ybor City to uncover its rich history.
And its infamous history too!
Says Cigar City Magazine Contributing Editor and tour guide Manny Leto: "I think a lot of people are familiar with Ybor, they come down to this area to have a drink and have a good time, but I'm not sure that everyone knows we are surrounded by all this history."
While you're stepping back into Ybor's history, you're also stepping back into a crime underworld.
Reputed mobsters like Charlie Wall, the Trafficantes and Jimmy Velasko lived and worked on these streets.
Leto guides Virginia Johnson from Tampa Bay On Demand, your local entertainment channel, to a brick wall between 4th and 5th Avenues on 20th Street.
"On this spot in 1948, Jimmy Velasco, a well-known gangster and gambler, was shot while he was getting into his Buick one night...his murder remains unsolved. No one has even been convicted of the crime."
