POLK COUNTY (Bay News 9) -- Students at the area's only high school aerospace academy got a unique opportunity Wednesday morning.
Central Florida Aerospace Academy of Kathleen High School students saw the Goodyear blimp flying high and were wondering what it was doing in the area.
Turns out, one of the county's three blimps is using the Lakeland Linder Regional Airport as its base of operations this week.
Students were able to get an up-close look and tour. They also learned from the blimp staff how technology helps it fly.
"I didn't know it was hollow, completely hollow," said freshman Timothy Pollock. "I thought there was some kind of structure inside."
The blimp and its staff had a day off. They'll be high above and filming in Orlando Thursday and Friday. Then, it's off to Tampa for the ACC Championship Football Game Saturday.
