Private homeowners are not alone when it comes to difficulties paying bills.
Some Bay area businesses are having trouble paying their taxes. And their names are now part of a public list put out by the Florida Department of Revenue.
The agency is listing what is calls 'Florida's Delinquent Taxpayers' on its website. The companies on the list owe the most of any in their counties, according to the department.
Among the Bay area companies on the list:
A downtown St. Petersburg apartment complex listed as the home of a company called TJM, LLC. According to the department, TJM owes the has the highest amount of back taxes due in Pinellas County at $184,000.
In Hillsborough County, 'Cheap in Soho' and the 'Block in Soho, LLC' are on the list for its $192,000.
The monies owed are for either sales tax, unemployment tax or transient rental tax.
Robert Babin with the Florida Department of Revenue said public lists like these have worked to bring in money in other parts of the country.
"Those other states did see an increase in tax collections immediately after they started using it,'' Babin said. "So, I do believe that there's a hope that it will generate more collections."
Other companies on the list are the 'Kikiki 3 Lounge' (located in Tampa's Hyde Park) for $81,000 and Lakeland's 'National Erosion Control Incorporated,'' tops in the area with a tax bill of $373,000.
A manager at the company had no comment when questioned about the tax bill by Bay News 9.
Babin said the only positive about being on the list is that those businesses qualify for the new tax amnesty program.
"That's going to allow taxpayers to avoid having to pay some penalties,'' he said. "And some small amounts of interest if they come in and get their taxes taken care of now."
Florida's legislature passed a law allowing for the Department of Revenue to publish the tax delinquency list. It was tied into the new tax amnesty program.
The first list was made public a few weeks ago and is updated monthly.
