The driver in a crash that witnesses said was caused by red light running has died.
According to the St. Petersburg Police Department, Javon L. Oliver of St. Petersburg was eastbound on 9th Avenue South in a 2008 Ford Escape at a high rate of speed.
Police said Oliver, 20, ran a red light and drove into the path of a 2000 Chevrolet pickup truck being driven by Leroy J. Williams, 48, also of St. Petersburg.
Oliver died about 3:30 Tuesday morning. One of his passengers, Daniel E. Toler, 20, of St. Petersburg, who was in the rear seat, was taken to Bayfront Medical Center in serious condition.
The other passenger in the Escape, Malcolm L. Willis, 20, of St. Petersburg, who was in the right front seat, was taken to Bayfront Medical Center in critical condition.
The Chevrolet's driver, Williams, was not injured.
Police said the Escape became airborne after hitting the pickup truck, rolled, and struck a steel light pole, roof first.
Toler was ejected from the Escape; Oliver and Willis had to be extricated from the vehicle by St. Petersburg Fire Rescue.
The accident happened just before 11 p.m. Monday at the intersection of 16th Street South and 9th Avenue South.
