A familiar face around the Lakeland Police Department and community retired Tuesday at the age of 86.
George Butler worked as the elderly services coordinator for LPD's Community Services unit.
Dozens of his co-workers gathered at the department to wish him farewell. His wife of 65-years, Gloria, was also in attendance.
Butler was with the department for 22 years. Although he got paid for putting in 40-hours each week, he didn't call it work.
“That’s the worst word in the English dictionary,” said Butler. “They should cross it out. If you don't like what you're doing, don't do it. Life is too short."
He reported to work at 6:30 a.m. five days a week, starting each day checking his email and voicemail. Then, Butler hopped in his station vehicle and hit the streets of Lakeland. He said it wasn't unusual for him to make up to 10 house calls each day.
"They pay taxes for 40, 50 years and they don't know that a lot of the services are free,” said Butler. “I feel good when I let them know there's help for them."
The former US Air Force Buck Sergeant and retired general contractor started delivering milk at age seven in his New Jersey hometown.
Butler said he’s looking forward to spending more time with his family. He has eight children, 28 grandchildren, and 16 great grandchildren.
Though, he said he will miss the elderly people he helps in the community and his co-workers.
Butler's supervisor said his hard-working attitude is an inspiration everyone at the department will remember.
"You can't replace George,” said Greg Robinson. “He's one of those people who is irreplaceable."
