Two weeks ago, the Bay area said goodbye to New York Yankees owner George Steinbrenner.
In the wake of his death, many wondered what would happen to the foundations he set up to help others.
Even though the economic downturn has slammed non-profit organizations, according to VP of Development Lisa Richardson, the Boys and Girls Club of Tampa is doing alright because of a simple donation request from the Steinbrenner family.
"We've received a few thousand dollards in just the last week or so," she said. "And we do continue to receive a few donations every day."
After George Steinbrenner's death, the family asked friends to forgo flowers and send donations to a handful of organizations.
The Gold Shield Foundation, a charity Steinbrenner founded for the children of fallen officers, has also received significant donations at the request of the family.
The group's director Joe Voskerichian won't say how much they've received so far, but he is spending a lot of his time thanking donors.
"I've sent out 120 thank you's just last week," he said.
The Gold Shield Foundation is also receiving sympathy cards from members of the Tampa community, which Voskerichian plans to send to the Steinbrenner family by next week.
There is still no word on a public memorial for George Steinbrenner, who had a private funeral in Pasco County last week.
