- Officials are searching for 10-foot gator that ate dog (July 27, 2010)
A 10-foot gator is playing hard to get in St. Petersburg as it remains on the loose after being sighted on Friday.
Alligator control officials say they've been searching for the gator for nearly two years.
Residents have been keeping an eye out after the deadly incident that occurred on Monday, where the gator jumped out of a canal near the Dali Museum and ate a dog.
One resident spotted the gator on Friday afternoon near 11th Avenue South and 6th Street South.
Trappers fired shots at it, but it ended up escaping again under a bridge. They have been given the green light to go ahead and shoot the gator if it appears again.
