Who do you think will benefit the most from Bud Chiles ending his independent gubernatorial bid?
More Info
A spokesperson for Lawton "Bud" Chiles said he will announce the end of his gubernatorial bid Thursday.
Chiles is the son of the late Lawton Chiles, a popular Democratic Florida governor and senator. Chiles has been a lifelong Democrat, but entered the race as a candidate with no party affiliation.
Chiles is scheduled to appear with Alex Sink, the Democratic nominee for governor, to endorse her at a press conference Thursday.
Recent polls showed Chiles receiving only 12 percent from registered voters in a three-way race with Sink and Republican nominee Rick Scott.
That same survey taken in mid-August showed Sink with a slight lead over Scott. Chiles' departure is largely seen as an advantage to Sink, whose campaign feared that much of his support would damage her chances.
However, polls had also suggested Chiles was getting just as much support from Republicans and independents.
