Bud Chiles is out, throws support behind Alex Sink

Lawton 'Bud" Chiles has officially withdrawn from the Florida gubernatorial race.

The official announcement of the expected move was made Thursday in Tallahassee.

In announcing his withdrawal, Chiles thanks supporters and immediately threw his support behind Democratic nominee Alex Sink, who appeared with Chiles.

"After much soul searching, continuing my campaign may well divide good people with common goals,'' Chiles said. "And hand a victory to someone I'm not sure has Florida's best interest at heart.''

In a Bay News 9/News 13/St. Petersburg Times exclusive statewide poll conducted in August, Chiles owned about 14 percent of the vote.

Democrats are optimistic Chiles' endorsement will give Sink a boost in the race against GOP nominee Rick Scott.

Sink said she was grateful for Chiles' backing.

"He (Chiles) and I share a deep love for Florida,'' Sink said. "And we realize that this election is critical for the future of Florida.''
