Police: Teen shot man after argument over $2

Last Updated:

A teenager was arrested Wednesday after police said he shot a man after an argument over $2.

According to reports, the shooting took place just before 4 p.m. on 13th Street in Lakeland. Police said that when they arrived, they found Tommie McGowan, 43, suffering from a gunshot wound to the shoulder.

McGowan was taken to Lakeland Regional Medical Center for treatment for injuries that are described as not life-threatening.

Investigators said McGowan and the 17-year-old suspect had been arguing outside over $2, and that when McGowan walked back toward his residence, the suspect shot him in the shoulder with a .22-caliber rifle.

The suspect is currently on probation for armed burglary and was being monitored by an ankle bracelet. He was arrested later that day at a relative's home without incident.

He is facing charges of aggravated battery with a firearm, delinquent in possession of a firearm and violation of home detention.

Bay News 9 is not releasing the suspect's name in accordance with our Crime Guidelines, as it is not yet known whether he will be charged as an adult.
