A huge development the size of a town is one step closer to reality in Hernando County.
Yellow signs are the first indication that something is up north of Brooksville. Around 4,000 acres of former mining land could turn into a major development.
The Quarry Preserve development would essentially be a town, with nearly 6,000 homes, golf courses, a school, a community park and more.
The Hernando County Commission has approved the project, and so now the plan goes to the Florida Department of Community Affairs for a final review. If the DCA approves it, the project will get the green light.
Not everyone in the area is thrilled by the prospect of a town-sized development.
"You know this is a nice, quiet, little community," said Michelle Paedae, who doesn't like the plan. "The population hovers around 1,000 depending on the day and it is so peaceful and so quiet."
If the plan is approved by the state, another three to five years of planning will have to take place before any construction can begin.
