Three Polk County schools are getting the chance to harness power from the sun and save some cash while doing so.
The schools have been chosen to receive solar-powered electrical systems. The systems cost between $50,000 and $80,000 each and should be up and running by spring of 2012.
The systems are intended for emergency use, but as long as the sun is shining, it will provide power, which means a reduction in energy costs for the schools.
In all, 90 schools across the nation were chosen.
The Polk County schools are: Dr. N. E. Roberts Elementary in Lakeland, Palmetto Elementary in Poinciana, and Haines City High School.
