- Retirement community wants their swans back (Sept. 6, 2010)
A pair of swans were returned to their home at the Lake Highlander Mobile Home Park, the day after they went missing.
The swans, named Chipper and Dipper, had roosted at the community for 15 years. On Monday, the residents noticed the swans had vanished.
Neighbors didn't believe they had flown the coop, as their wings had been clipped when they were young. A fence also surrounds the pond, so it would be difficult for them to escape.
Residents suspected someone had taken the swans.
The mystery of the swans was answered Monday night, after news reports of the missing swans aired on television.
A couple of men returned them late Monday after watching the news. They said they had purchased the swans from some children for $20, but they hadn't realized they were stolen.
Once the men saw the news report, they said they felt they need to return the swans to their home and brought them back to the community.
The swans are now safely at their pond.
Some residents believe that children from a nearby school may be responsible for the thefts of the swans, as well as a string of bicycle burglaries over the past few weeks.
