Friends and family of 15-year-old Otilio Rubio say it was a simple lapse in judgement that cost him his life.
Rubio's mother Susan Rodriguez fought back tears as she remembered the day her son was shot.
Polk County investigators say Rubio and three other friends were trying to break into a Davenport home on Tuesday when the homeowner shot and killed him.
"I don't know what was going through their minds that morning,” said Otilio’s mother, Susan Rodriguez.
Otilio's three friends are now charged with felony murder after his death. Right now, they're being charged as juveniles, but they could be facing adult charges.
"It's not that I lost my son, we lost four," said Susan.
"On that day they all made a terrible, terrible mistake," said Otilio’s great aunt Novella Skinner.
Family and friends sponsored a car wash to raise money to cover his burial. They say even though he'd been in minor trouble before, no one expected his life to end like it did.
"I think it was just bad judgement of him," said Otilio’s friend Larry Howard. "When you're young like that and you're 15-years-old, you don't really think that when you go to do something stupid like that you're going to die."
"He did make some mistakes in his life like most teens do, but this was just devastating," said Skinner.
The family says he paid the ultimate price for his final mistake. They hope to raise enough money to give the fifteen year old a proper burial next Saturday.
