“Who says you can’t replace a legend?”
That’s the retort Jimbo Fisher gives in response to the question, “How do you replace Bobby Bowden?” The legendary Florida State head coach passed the torch to his former offensive coordinator this off-season, and Fisher never hesitated when he was presented with the opportunity to fill Bowden’s monumental shoes.
“It’s too good a situation. Florida State is too good a job, too good a place, and it’s the job you always aspire to get to,” the veteran of 22 seasons as an assistant says.
“The Florida State job is one of those jobs, to me, it’s one of the top five or 10 jobs in the country. You can stay there a long time and achieve everything you want to do.”
Fisher inherits a well-stocked cupboard in Tallahassee, including a Heisman Trophy candidate in quarterback Christian Ponder, and supplemented the existing roster with a top-10 recruiting class in February. His self-assigned task is now to modernize the Seminoles program.
“Player development is where we have to catch up.”
