Project Weather Scholarship Contest

The Project Weather Scholarship Contest is a one-time award of $1,000 presented to seven high school seniors who excel in science. 

The scholarship is granted as a part of Bay News 9's commitment to educating children about science and weather.

The 2012 winners are: Morgan Metzger of Citrus High School in Citrus County; Justin Cotto of Nature Coast Technical High School in Hernando County; Jacqueline Higgins of Wharton High School in Hillsborough County; Ashley Ogedegbe of Manatee High School in Manatee County; Alexandra Pierovich of Land O'Lakes High School in Pasco County; Erin Moore of East Lake High School in Pinellas County and Taryn Renz of George Jenkins High School in Polk County.

Explorations V Children's Museum

Explorations V Children's Museum

Explorations V Children's Museum in Lakeland is home to a replica of a working TV news station. Complete with anchor desk, weather maps and camera, children can put on a Bay News 9 blazer and re-enact severe weather news situations.

Brought to the museum by Bay News 9/Bright House Networks, the exhibit provides hands-on learning for children and their families.

Great Explorations Children's Museum

Bay News 9 Project Weather is now at the Great Explorations Children's Museum in St. Petersburg!

Kids can play with a weather map and seven-day forecast chart. They can answer weather related questions that will also challenge their spelling. Plus they can put on a Bay News 9 blazer and get in front of the chroma key wall with a script they just created.

Now storm enthusiasts can feel the power of a hurricane in the new hurricane simulator.  A one-minute ride only costs $2.

Science Center of Pinellas County

The Science and Technology Education Innovation Center formerly known as the Science Center, is committed to bringing quality hands-on science education to area students.

Classroom programs are aligned with the Sunshine State Standards making them a valuable learning experience and more than just a fun field trip.

Bay News 9 has partnered with the Science Center and created a Project Weather Classroom. The room has a weather sensor and radar on a very large screen TV, along with cameras. Bay News 9 meteorologists periodically assist in teaching weather classes at the Science Center in St. Petersburg.

Bay News 9 WeatherQuest at MOSI

WEATHERQUEST is a heart-pounding, MINDS-ON exhibit within Disasterville at the Museum of Science and Industry.

The exhibit features the Bay News 9 news desk and meteorologist green screen for realistic role-playing situations.

  • Play the role of a news reporter
  • Experience emergency management
  • Identify and solve hazardous situations

Glazer Children's Museum

Bay News 9 Rain or Shine!

The Glazer Children's Museum in downtown Tampa is a fun-filled learning adventure.  The mission of the museum is to create learning environments where children play, discover and connect to the world around them to develop as lifelong learners and leaders.

The Bay News 9 Rain or Shine exhibit does just that.  Kids can make it rain, lightning and thunder while learning about weather and the water cycle. 

The museum is located at 110 W. Gasparilla Plaza in Tampa.  Hourly parking is available in the Poe Garage at Ashley and Cass Streets.  The museum can be reached at 813-443-3861.

Life Force Cultural Arts Academy

Bay News 9 has a partnership with Life Force Cultural Arts Academy in Clearwater.

Project Weather information is being supplied for the summer camp and after school programs. Kids there receive a Project Weather Activity Book and hurricane tracking charts along with a wall size tracking chart.

One of the Bay News 9 meteorologists will speak to the kids during the summer camp about severe weather and answer questions. The kids also come to Bay News 9 for a studio tour.

Local School Science & Weather:

Studio tours are given on Tuesdays at 10 a.m.

Visitors must be at least 9 years old. Groups should have at least six people but no more than 20.

Family Safety

Bay News 9 produced a safety video relating to hurricanes, lightning and severe weather.

The video is used by Fire & Rescue Departments throughout our seven county viewing area.  Many agencies take their safety programs to schools and community events to help educate children about both fire and severe weather safety.
