BOONE, N.C. (AP) -- Robert Welton rushed for three touchdowns and Armanti Edwards accounted for two more as Appalachian State cruised to a 56-7 win over Jacksonville.
Welton finished with 161 yards on 10 carries for the defending Football Championship Series champion Mountaineers (1-1). He led the way for a rushing attack that tallied 448 yards against 43 for the Dolphins (0-2) in the win.
Appalachian State bolted to a 21-0 lead on the Dolphins in the first quarter, including Welton's 44-yard touchdown run. Edwards scored on a 28-yards and threw a 6-yard touchdown Tavaris Washington to give Appalachian State a 28-0 lead at halftime.
Welton added a 72- and 2-yard touchdown to put the Mountaineers ahead 42-7 in the fourth.
Edwards finished with 77 rushing yards and 45 yards passing, completing 3-of-8 with one interception for Appalachian State. Devon Moore had 94 yards rushing and a touchdown, along with an 11-yard rushing score in the first quarter for the Mountaineers.
