Dog Kennel Hero

Tralynn Barbee lived in a dog kennel for a week as a fundraiser.

It's no fun having to spend the night away from your own bed.

But a Hernando County girl chose to spend a full week away from her home just to help the animals at the Humane Society of the Nature Coast.

Twelve-year-old Tralynn Barbee lived in a dog kennel at the shelter, 24 hours a day for seven days, as part of the humane society's 'Raise the Woof' fundraiser. Tralynn raised hundreds of dollars by having friends and family give her donations for food and 10 minute 'walks' during her time in the kennel.

She also shared her home away from home with two of the shelter dogs in hopes of raising awareness about the need for them to get a good home. She said any discomfort was worth it to help the Humane Society and the animals.

Tralynn has been volunteering there for five years, since she was only 7. She takes part in every fundraiser and donates two weekends every month to volunteering at the shelter.

She also chronicled her time in the kennel in her journal to share it with other young people to teach them about pet responsibility and let them know kids can make a difference.
