A criminal suspect managed to get away from police in St. Petersburg and the search is on for a man officers say may be armed and dangerous.

On Saturday, St. Petersburg police put up a perimeter at 37th Street and 5th Avenue North to track down Quinton Cummings.

Investigators said they received a tip that Cummings was wanted on a sexual battery warrant and was in the vicinity.

When police tracked Cummings and tried to take him into custody, he fled on foot.

Police believe he committed armed sexual battery earlier in the week.

"There's a lot of police activity," concerned homeowner Kathy Miller said. "There are children. We need to know what is going on and if we need to keep our eyes open."

Police described Cummings as a black male, 170 pounds, 5"11" tall, wearing a black basketball shirt and red shorts.

Investigators believe they may have located the suspect's shorts in a homeowner's backyard.

If you have any information about the whereabouts of Cummings, you are urged to call the St. Petersburg Police Department.
