Homicide investigation in Tarpon Springs

Clues are few and far between for now.

The Tarpon Springs Police Department and several other agencies are investigating the discovery of human skeletal remains.

The bones were found Wednesday afternoon by a crew doing a land survey in a wooded area off of U.S. 19 in between Brittany Park and the Tarpon Springs Driving Range.

The case is being treated as a homicide. Investigators say the medical examiner will determine the age, race and sex of the victim and how they died.

"The detectives, no matter what crime scene they're at, are always going to have to piece it together one piece at a time," said Sgt. Jeff Young with Tarpon Springs Police. "They're going to use the physical evidence that's on scene. Obviously, if it was a fresh case that we had witnesses to or something of that nature, it'd be a lot easier for them, but they'll have their work cut out for them. That's for sure."

The discovery interrupted a beautiful, quiet day in the area.

Joel Tucker of the driving range says a few months ago, construction crews put in a sidewalk and they didn't find the body, so it's not clear how long the body might have been there.

"How it'd get there and how long it's been there," said Tucker. "That's the thing. Because we've been here quite a few years and this place has been here a long time."
