A 17-year-old Alonso High School student, attending a pre-conditioning drill for baseball, collapsed and died after completing a mile run Wednesday afternoon.

Mathew Miulli, a junior, collapsed after the run and was rushed to Town and Country Hospital, where he died at approximately 5:45 p.m., according to Hillsborough County School District spokesperson Mark Hart.

"Our primary concern is that there were a 100 student athletes in the vicinity when he collapsed," Hart said. "They are now learning that he has passed. We will have our hands full tomorrow with grief counseling."

Hart said the student was a transfer student from another school in the area.

The students were doing conditioning drills in anticipation of tryouts later this week.
