Lakeland man charged with aggravated manslaughter
Thursday, November 10, 2005
A Lakeland father is being charged in connection with the death of his infant son.
Lakeland police say 20-year-old Alvin Arteaga placed his 3-month-old baby, Calvin, in a bear hug and shook him to stop him from crying during the last week of October.
Police say the baby's mother had no idea the child had been abused until he stopped breathing on Oct. 31, so she took him to Lakeland Regional Medical Center, where he died.
The autopsy showed Calvin had seven broken ribs, a ruptured spleen and a lacerated liver, and that he died from internal bleeding. Police say on Wednesday, Arteaga admitted squeezing Calvin several times in the last week of his life.
Arteaga is in the Polk County Jail on charges of aggravated manslaughter of a child.
