A one cent gas tax is on county commissioners' agenda this week.
More than 800 Pinellas residents were questioned about what they believe is important as the county looks toward the future.

Ninety-four percent who responded told commissioners they need to preserve open space and manage growth in the county.

"So, proper planning for redevelopment of what already exists, blighted property, attracting corporations with high-paying jobs, making sure what is redeveloped is done with forethought and planning and isn't led ad hoc is critically important because there just isn't much land left," Pinellas County Communications Director Marcia Crawley said.

Crawley said improving traffic signals was also a top priority.

"Folks are telling us, look, you guys really need to get out there and fix these signals to make sure they're timed correctly," Crawley said.

A proposed one cent gas tax is on commissioners' agenda this week. That money could provide funding for an Intelligent Transportation System that will regulate traffic lights.

Crawley said improving traffic signals is also a top priority.
Regarding taxes, 80 percent of the respondents said they would be willing to support a one cent restaurant food and beverage tax to help fund programs for the homeless.

It requires approval by the legislature, but it would generate more than $2 million a year for homeless efforts if implemented.

Crawley said in the focus groups, participants said if people can afford to eat out, they can afford to help people without homes.

When it comes to money, the survey shows public safety, protecting the environment and attracting more high-paying jobs are the top three funding priorities.
