The campus will be building its first residence hall.
The University of South Florida's St. Petersburg campus hosted a groundbreaking ceremony today as the school is set to build a residence hall on campus.

USF St. Petersburg chancellor Karen White said this step makes campus life more like a university.

"This is a great opportunity for us to add an element of student life that has never existed," White said.

This will be the school's first residence hall.

"With this, you'll see a lot more energy coming from this building," student body president Tom Piccolo said.

The seven-story building will house 354 students.

School officials said it's a project that's keeping the school's development as a strong four-year institution on the right track.

"We're moving from a different type of institution where students come and go throughout the day to a 24-7 experience," White said.

The project will cost more than $18 million. It is expected to be completed by fall 2006.
