Rain shuts down Hillsborough County street

This road floods during heavy rain.
Heavy rain shut down a street in the University area of Hillsborough County Wednesday afternoon.

Rainwater flooded 131st Avenue between Livingston Avenue and 27th Street.

The storm dumped about a foot of standing water at the intersection, causing Hillsborough County Public Works Crews to shut it down.

Sandbags were brought in to keep the water back, and pumps were turned on to help divert the water.

The nearby University area HARTline Transit Center was also affected by the flooded streets. Buses had to drive around the standing water so they wouldn't get flooded themselves.

The problem in the area is that when heavy rains fall, ponds near the University Mall usually overflow, causing streets to flood with rainwater.

Hillsborough County recently tried to correct the flooding problem, but more work remains to be done.
