Inmate says Onstott confessed to Lunde's murder

Sarah Lunde was 13 when she was murdered.
New evidence was released Wednesday in the case against suspected child killer David Onstott, giving a chilling glimpse into Onstott's mind the night he allegedly murdered Sarah Lunde last April.

The Hillsborough County State Attorney's Office released an interview with a man Onstott may have confided in while in jail.

Lunde, 13, was happiest surrounded by her church friends, just being an everyday teenager. At home, however, her life was anything but normal. She survived foster care, violent family fights and hospitalization for mental illness.

That, however, was nothing compared to what happened to her on the last day of her life.

Investigators said Onstott, 36, tried to rape her and then murdered her. A fellow inmate told investigators Onstott confessed to sexually molesting Lunde, saying it was just like another rape he committed back in 1995.

Lunde's partially clad body was found April 16, 2005 in a pond about a half-mile from her Ruskin home.

It's unclear whether Lunde knew about Onstott's past. But she did know Onstott because he dated her mother for a few weeks.

On the night of April 9, investigators said Lunde was the only one home when Onstott showed up. They believe he came into the home, tried to rape her and then murdered her.

It was all over by the time Lunde's teenage brother, Andrew, got home in the wee hours of the morning. He walked in to the trailer and discovered his sister gone.

David Onstott is charged with first-degree murder.
He worried when he did not see Lunde inside the trailer. Worry turned to confusion when Onstott showed up an hour or so later. Onstott asked if the teenager's mother was home.

"I said 'No,' and he goes 'Where is she at?' " Andrew Lunde said. "I was like, 'She's gone for the weekend. She ain't going to be back until Sunday evening.' And he goes 'Alright,' and he takes one step in the house and picked up the beer bottle. I still got the mud stain on the carpet where he left."

Deputies would later stage a massive search for that bottle, believing it could be evidence in the case against Onstott. It was never found.

In a sad bit of irony, Lunde's brother told investigators his sister wanted to go with him to get dinner. He told her there was no room in the car, then he left the trailer and went to pick up two other friends, leaving his sister alone to her fate.
