About 3,000 people were evacuated from a downtown Tampa apartment and commercial building Monday morning because of an electrical problem, according to Tampa Fire Rescue.
The Park Building, as it's known, is located at 400 Tampa Street. Initial reports from Tampa Fire said there were smoke and flames showing from the seventh floor at about 9 a.m., but that turned out to be false.
The problem in the building turned out to be in the electrical room on the fifth floor. An electrical bus suffered some type of failure or short. The bus is where power for about half the building comes in. There was some type of arc that caused some charring of the large electrical unit but there was not any fire or smoke, according to Tampa Fire Rescue.
The problem caused the elevators to stop working. There were no injuries.
The building has 36 floors and was built in 1972. It was renovated in 1997.
