Dogs now allowed in Naples parks

NAPLES (AP) - Dogs are now free to stroll through Naples city parks as long as they're on a leash and stay away from playgrounds.
The city council voted last week to scrap a little-enforced law banning dogs from city parks, although the prohibition on pooches walking on the beaches remains.
The change was prompted after dog owners contacted city officials about the council's discussion of rewriting the city code without lifting the dog ban.
Community Services Director David Lykins called the law impractical because enforcement is difficult. Records show only four citations issued in the past two years.
City officials do plan to make it easier for dog walkers to clean up with the installation of doggy bags and special trash receptacles. Those ignoring the rules, including not picking up after their dogs and keeping them off playgrounds, will get a citation and a $65 fine.
