ST. PETERSBURG (Bay News 9) -- A two-vehicle accident at a busy Pinellas County intersection Saturday morning killed a 24-year old woman and seriously injured her husband.
Two vehicles collided, sending a Honda Civic crashing into a nearby building. The other vehicle was a Dodge pickup truck.
Angela Schofield, 24, a passenger in the Honda died at the scene. Investigators say her husband, Joseph Schofield, was driving their car at a high rate of speed when it hit the pick-up truck. He was transported to Bayfront Medical Center with serious injuries.
The driver of the Dodge pickup also was taken to the hospital and was treated and released with minor injuries.
The accident left a huge impression on Ashley White, 12.
White witnessed the crash as she stepped outside her home this morning. She lives across the street from the crash site at 49th Street N. and 38th Avenue N.
"Really scary, makes me never wanna get in a car again," White said."A car was coming this way and smashed the front of that car, the car flips, came up in the air and smacked the sign. Went in circles and smacked the side of the building."
St. Petersburg Police said the pickup was making a left turn onto 38th Avenue when it hit the Honda.
The Honda crashed into the building where Brown Town Tanning is located.
"The column post has been knocked out," said Lt. Rick Feinberg with St. Petersburg Fire Rescue. "Our crews have stabilized that. The rescue crew has put some shoring up to make sure the building doesn't collapse."
"This is the worst I've ever seen," White said.
None of the businesses in the strip mall were open at the time of the accident and no one else was hurt.
