Weather on the Nines
Olga became a tropical storm Tuesday evening.

MIAMI -- Now a tropical storm, Olga is moving across Hispaniola.

The center of the storm is about 55 miles north-northwest of Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic. It is expected to past over the eastern tip of Cuba next.

And while the storm is expected to continue its westward path and not affect Florida, some moisture from the storm may move towards the Bay area.

Olga, with 45 mph winds, is moving west at about 19 miles per hour.

"Olga will become more disorganized due to its interaction with Hispaniola and its mountains,' said Bay News 9 meteorologist Josh Linker. "The storm will emerge back over water but won't strenghthen too much. But the moisture from the storm could get drawn northward into a cold front near Florida by Saturday. So it could increase our rain chances.'

At least four deaths are being blamed on floods and landslides triggered by Tropical Storm Olga in the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico.

Olga first formed shortly before 9 p.m. over the Virgin Islands, 10 days after the Atlantic hurricane season ended. The Atlantic hurricane season ended Nov. 30.

There have been 10 recorded tropical or sub-tropical storms in December since 1851, five of which became hurricanes. The U.S. has not had a hurricane make landfall in December.
