Buckethead wants to create awareness to help kids stay safe.
(Slideshow) In response to the rise in recent years of child abductions, Buckethead, host of 98 Rock's morning show, said
Project Stay Alert intertwines knowledge of what to do and teaches self-defense.
Buckethead organized the project, which takes place today at the St. Pete Times Forum from noon to 5 p.m., to teach kids what to do in case they are abducted and how to defend themselves if needed.
Buckethead said he came up with the idea after hearing about the recent kidnapping case in Manatee County where a man abducted 13-year old
Clay Moore from his bus stop in Parrish.
Just hours after he was kidnapped
Moore was able to escape unharmed.
"He knew the face of his abductor, he was smart enough, too,"
Defense Against Abductors
Buckethead said. "He had a safety pin in order to get away from his abductor, so someone gave him that knowledge. So Project Stay Alert actually stemmed from Clay Moore. We figured we need to create this knowledge."
Moore used a safety pin to free himself and walked to safety. A move Buckethead said saved his life. Information he wants other children to learn in case they find themselves in a similar situation.
Project Stay Alert is open to the public and free.
Along with self-defense instructors, celebrity guests will be on hand like pro-wrestler Bubba Ray Dudley.
Mark Lunsford, who's daughter,
Jessica Lunsford , was kidnapped and killed in Citrus County, will also speak.
