High-tech chariot

For Greg Caminiti, encountering a growling, barking dog isn't unusual.

Aboard his Segway, running errands can be an adventure.

Whether he's dodging cars or negotiating rough terrain, he's happy to leave his BMW at home and wheel around aboard his one-man, high-tech chariot.

"All of my chores and everything, the bank, Starbucks and my offices. Everything is within a couple of miles," Caminiti said.

In fact, when he stops by a restaurant for a cup of coffee, he wheels right in, takes his cup to go and he's back on the move. It's his environmentally friendly way of bypassing the gas pumps.

"It does save gas," Caminiti said. "It saves money. It's very good on the environment. You just plug it into an outlet, no gas at all."

No matter where he goes, someone wants to take it for a ride, like Maybelline Huff.

"I think it's great," Huff said. "It's fun. You can fly on it."

That's if you consider 12.5 mph flying. And getting 12 miles on each charge makes it practical for Caminiti.

For most people, it may still be a high-tech vision of the future. But Caminiti said everyone should at least give it a try.

Saving on gas makes Caminiti smile as well.

"I just love this thing," Caminiti said. "And I highly recommend it for anyone."

Spoken like a man who enjoys keeping his money in his pocket, instead of spending it at the pump.

The Segway was originally unveiled in 2001. But they are becoming more popular. More than 400 police and security agencies around the country use them for patrolling urban areas.

One of the units costs about $5,000.
