Pursuing a college degree while working full time can be a daunting task for any adult.
It was even more so for Citrus County residents, who had no local university close enough to attend regularly.
But a partnership with a private university is making it a little easier as students at Central Florida Community College's Lecanto campus can now complete bachelor's degrees in business administration at that location.
The college has partnered with St. Leo University to offer its second degree program in Citrus County. Since the mid-1990s, the Lecanto campus has offered students a bachelor's degree in elementary education through St. Leo.
The business classes that start this fall will be on Friday and Saturday nights, tailored to residents who want a degree but have full-time jobs.
CFCC Citrus Provost Vernon Lawter said demand will determine if any more bachelor's programs are offered at the Lecanto location. Programs in human services and criminal justice could be added next, officials said.
"St. Leo has the same position we have,'' Lawter said. "It's going to be the students who ultimately decide which programs are offered here and they'll make that decision by showing up and enrolling."
The classes are more expensive due to St. Leo being a private school. But Florida residents who enroll in a private school full time are eligible for a $3,000-per-year tuition scholarship that could cut those costs almost in half.
