ST. PETERSBURG (Bay News 9) --Four candidates will move on to the Nov. 6 general election after topping the ballot in two races Tuesday.
In District 3, Ed Montanari and Bill Dudley received the most votes, defeating Cliff Gephart and Cathy Harrelson. Current council member Bill Foster did not run for reelection because of term limits.
In District 5, James Bennett and Chris Kelly will face off in November, defeating Debra Johnson-Woodard. Bennett is the incumbent and is the acting city council chairman since the death last week of chairman John Bryan.
The city reported one of the lowest voter turnouts ever for its city council primary elections. A little more than 4,500 ballots were cast out of a possible 40,775, a turnout of 11 percent, according to Bay News 9's partner, the St. Petersburg Times.
The previously recorded low was also 11 percent, set in a city election in 1995.
