HERNANDO COUNTY (Bay News 9)--New flood insurance maps are in store for Hernando County.
The current maps, which are between 10 and 30 years old, are being replaced by updated ones.
The Southwest Florida Water Management District and the county are drawing up the new maps to get a clearer picture of what areas of the county would flood, and what areas would not.
Some residents said they were surprised about the new maps and the area that they cover.
"I am very surprised. I've been here 13 years and we've never had a flood. We never had a problem with water
before," said Reno Deschenes, a resident of Hernando County, who now finds his home on the flood map.
Workshops were set up for residents to look at the information and to give their input.
Officials said that they are about halfway through the process, but they still have to go through a long approval process which includes the approval from the federal government.
