HERNANDO COUNTY (Bay News 9) -- Hernando County officials are putting a plan in place designed to boost the county's economy.
County commissioners voted to approve a plan that pays companies thousands of dollars to create jobs.
Under the plan, called the Job Creation Incentive Program, the county will pay $2,000 for every job a company creates that pays the county's average wage. The companies get $3,000 if they pay the employee well over the average wage.
County leaders hope to attract new companies and to entice existing ones to expand.
Don Silvernell runs the Airport Industrial park. He said he has plenty of room for new businesses to set up shop.
"Right now we have about 1,750 employees on airport property here, so everyone that moves in, we add a few more to that," he said. "It's good for the county and the citizens here."
The plan also changes some existing rules which will make it easier for companies to qualify for different incentives offered by the county.
County leaders have already started marketing this plan. They said they hope it takes off immediately.
