HERNANDO COUNTY (Bay News 9) -- The state of Florida is now in show business.

Weeki Wachee is now called Weeki Wachee Springs State Park, and the world famous Weeki Wachee mermaids are officially state employees.

John Athanason, who has been with Weeki Wachee for years, says since he got involved the plan has always been to save the attraction. The best way to do that he says was to donate it to the state's park system.

"Everyone knows the park had fallen under a lot of disrepair, and so we worked very hard over the past five years to get it to this point which is today," Athanason said.

Weeki Wachee is now Florida's 160th state park. State officials say if they plan to make any changes, they will have a number of public hearings first.

Weeki Wachee Springs and its mermaids have been entertaining audiences for 61 years.
