WINTER HAVEN (Bay News 9) -- A Bay area airport is hoping a new terminal will attract more business.
The Winter Haven Airport terminal had been nothing more than a tiny old military barracks building, but it's now been replaced with a new $8-million facility.
The new terminal, which opened on Thursday, has a larger lobby with a high ceiling and encompasses about 13,000 square feet of space. A restaurant will be open for breakfast lunch and dinner to serve travelers and employees. In addition, the airport is talking with a rental car company about providing service there as well.
Airport officials say they are already seeing a major increase in activity.
"Our jet traffic has increased tremendously just since the terminal was announced," said airport division director Cheryl Connor. "And we are seeing a great increase in corporate travel."
The new terminal will be a lot more attractive for pilots, too. There is now a sleeping lounge for pilots and a weather and flight planning room.
