The state is in the process of shutting down the nursing home.

PINELLAS COUNTY (Bay News 9) -- A Pinellas County nursing home could soon be forced to close its doors.

Long Term Care of St. Petersburg is in the process of being shut down by the state, and now the 111 people who live there are in need of a new place to call home.

"I just don't know how they can discharge people and have half their things in boxes and not have a place for them to go," said a family member of a resident of the nursing home.

According to state officials, the home is currently operating with a license under litigation status and because of that there is no deadline yet for residents to leave the facility.

Last week the Florida Agency for Health Care Administration issued a final order to begin closing the home -- alleging substandard quality of care and lack of supervision.

Several charges indicate fighting between residents and staff. Court papers say the "failure to assess and reassess resident care, plan interventions and develop new interventions to prevent residents abusive and or combative behaviors...threatens the health, safety and welfare of residents and is contrary to law."

"I thought they were taking very good care of people," said Helen Hero, who has friends at the nursing home.

More Information

Hero says she thinks "it's a wonderful place to be when you need it."

But twice this year the state prevented the home from admitting new patients because of alleged violations.

Bay News 9 tried to speak with the director or the nursing home, but no one would speak on camera.

The administrators have 30 days to file an appeal to the state's decision; so far the state says no appeal has been filed.
