BAY NEWS 9 -- The Clearwater Police Department wants the public's help in cracking down on loud car stereos.
Under a new program called Clamp the Amp citizens can report booming car stereos online.
The department is asking those who hear amplified car stereos to note the date and location of the incident, the vehicle type, tag number and a brief description of the driver if possible.
An online report of excessive volume will generate a letter from the Clearwater Police Department to the vehicle's registered owner.
Under Florida law, amplified sound from a car that is audible from 25 feet or more away can result in a fine of $91. Although a police officer must observe the offense to take enforcement action, the letter will warn the vehicle's owner of the violation and create a record of complaints.
To report violations go to the Clearwater Police Department's web site.
The department stressed that no one should jeopardize his or her safety to obtain information about violators.
