TALLAHASEE, Fla. (AP) -- A spokeswoman for the Senate says legislators working on this year's budget have agreed to skip the state's annual sales tax holiday for hurricane supplies this year.
Cutting the program will save the state an estimated $12 million in this tight budget year. In recent years, the holiday has been held in late May, right before the beginning of hurricane season.
Senate spokeswoman Kathy Mears says while getting rid of the hurricane holiday, lawmakers did agree on a shortened, seven-day sales tax holiday for school supplies.
The holiday, which lasted 10 days last year, will cost the state an estimated $23 million.
Books will be excluded this year from the tax-exempt items. The holiday would apply to backpacks, clothing and shoes costing $50 or less and school supplies costing $10 or less.
