POLK COUNTY (Bay News 9) -- A Riverview woman was arrested Thursday after deputies said she left a newborn baby in a trash bin two years ago.
Kami Sargent, 41, was arrested after the Polk County Sheriff's Office said she was a match for the DNA taken from the placenta of a baby girl found in a trash bin in 2006.
Officials with the Sheriff's Office said the match showed up after she was placed on probation for driving with a suspended license in November of 2007.
Her DNA sample was entered into the Combined DNA Index System, or CODIS.
On May 20, the Sheriff's Office said they were notified that there was a match between the two samples by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.
The baby's body was found in a Lakeland trash bin in May of 2006. The Polk County Medical Examiner said the baby was alive and fully developed when born.
According to police reports, Sargent admitted that she left the baby in the trash bin because she did not want her family to know that she was pregnant.
She is being charged with aggravated manslaughter and will be booked into Polk County Jail.
