A Winter Haven company has gone green in a major way.

The American Vulkan plant in Winter Haven has installed almost 400 solar panels on its roof, and the company says that makes the installation the biggest photovoltaic system in the southeastern United States.

The solar panels produce 52 killowats of power, about a quarter of the electricity the plant needs to manufacture couplings for motors and turbines.

Greenlaw Solar Group installed the panels, and federal incentives and state tax rebates helped pay for the system. American Vulkan believes the solar system should pay for itself in about four years.

American Vulkan hopes to get about 70 percent of its electricity with additional solar panels in the future.
