BAY AREA (Bay News 9) -- A new survey released Tuesday finds most Florida renters are inadequately prepared to protect their homes and belongings, according to a study conducted by Opinion Research Corporation and Allstate.
The study finds just 37 percent of Floridians surveyed have renters insurance to cover their possessions in case of loss. Fifty-two percent of Tampa area renters reported having renters insurance.
The survey also found:
* 58 percent of Tampa area renters say they have not done a home inventory check list, or tried to estimate the cost of replacing everything in their home in the past year or two. Without home inventory check lists, renters may face challenges when filing a claim to replace stolen or damaged property, possibly delaying payment from their insurance provider.
* 42 percent of renters in Tampa estimate their belongings are worth $20,000 or more. According to the survey the average cost to replace personal property items found in a typical apartment is more than $13,600.
* 49 percent of Tampa renters underestimated the number of burglaries and other property crimes in the state.
However, the survey revealed that 93 percent of Tampa renters always lock their doors, and 79 percent always lock their windows.
* 45 percent of Tampa renters incorrectly guessed the cost of renters insurance.
The average cost of Allstate renters insurance in the Tampa area is $21. The average cost in Florida is $25 per month.
In Florida, nearly 2 million people rent apartments, and many others rent single family homes or townhouses.
Of those surveyed in Florida without renters insurance:
* 39 percent said they haven't gotten around to it.* 32 percent believed it's too expensive.
* 10 percent believed the landlord is responsible for insurance of their personal property.
