PASCO COUNTY (Bay News 9) -- Davis Hardware, a west Pasco County landmark, has closed its doors after about 75 years in business.
Davis Hardware has changed hands a few times throughout the years, most recently it was owned by Howard Dubrow.
But not everyone knows it is closed, some customers were surprised at the news.
"I feel bad, " said former customer Bob Neubauer. "Free enterprise -- I hate to see him go."
"They have nowhere else to find that little special something for their house," said former customer Rick Albrecht.
But the former owner says that was the problem, and it's hard to run a business selling dollar items here and there.
"If you came here to buy all of your products I'd still be in business," Dubrow said. "You go to Home Depot to spend a $100, and you come here to spend two on the odd bolts you can't get there."
Dubrow sold what he could, but some shelves are still full.
Before owning the hardware store, Dubrow said he was a senior vice president for a $6 billion company. He said he wouldn't go back to that.
Some customers are asking where they can pay their Progress Energy bill in person now that the hardware store is closed.
