CLEARWATER (Bay News 9) -- Illusionist Criss Angel successfully escaped the Spyglass Resort before it imploded Wednesday night.
The escape is supposed to be his last death-defying stunt.
Angel, the star of A&E's hit television show "Mind Freak," had to pick his way out of handcuffs and go through padlocked doors to escape.
Angel was planned to escape by grabbing onto a ladder hanging from a helicopter. However, the helicopter pulled away from the roof without Angel and the building imploded.
Moments later Angel walked out of the front of the hotel.
About 10,000 people crowded Clearwater Beach to watch the stunt and implosion.
The old Clearwater hotel was destroyed by the detonation of more than 450 sticks of dynamite.
Angel says he chose Clearwater because no other city in the country would allow him to be inside of a building that would be imploding.
Angel had described the stunt as "one of the biggest, baddest, craziest escapes" he has ever done.
