Five people inside the home were hospitalized with carbon monoxide poisoning.

PINELLAS COUNTY (Bay News 9) -- Emergency crews responded to a carbon monoxide poisoning Friday morning in St. Petersburg.

According to Pinellas County EMS, a generator was running inside of a home on Fairfield Avenue South.

Five people, two adults and three children, were all taken to area hospitals after crews responded to the home around 9 a.m.

The children, an 18-year-old girl, a 16-year-old boy and a 13-year-old boy, were taken to All Children's Hospital. The adults were taken to Bayfront Medical Center and later released along with the oldest child.

All were treated for carbon monoxide poisoning.

According to authorities, the mother awoke just before 8 a.m. and was having trouble waking the children.

Officials said the generator was running a few appliances because the family was in the process of moving and the power was out.

The St. Petersburg Fire Rescue Hazmat team found concentrations of carbon monoxide in the home measuring 52 parts per million.

Carbon Monoxide readings above 10 is considered problematic and lethal at 100.

Lt. Randy Kahle said generators should not be placed inside the home. He said this is a message emergency crews have been trying to get across for years.

"We thought we had the word out better prior to this," he said. "That this is a practice you shouldn't do at all, very very dangerous."
