MANATEE COUNTY (Bay News 9) -- Shops on Main Street in Lakewood Ranch are undergoing a retail revival.
After the area lost a grocery store and other shops more than a year ago some new stores are popping up.
Katy Rose Oilery, an olive oil specialty shop, opened last month. So far the owner, Don Whitson-Schmidt, says business is doing well.
"I had a really good September and September is not supposed to be a good month," he said. "We have had some merchant meetings and people are happy about what is going on here."
In fact, several merchants on Main Street are reporting better sales this summer compared to the last couple of years.
While there are some empty storefronts, three shops opened up last month, including Good Earth Natural Foods.
Whitson-Schmidt says it's a definite sign of revival he is happy to be a part of.
"I've been really pleased with the attitude of the customers," he said. "People are really excited and I'm happy about that."
The property manager for the Main Street shops says only 7 of its 37 retail spaces are vacant and interest in storefront leases is picking up.
Retailers also credit the weekly sponsored events on Main Street for bringing people in.
There's also a big event planned for this weekend. Rock' n Rumble West Coast Bike Rally events are planned Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.
